The last day of summer

What better way to spend the last day of summer - the August bank holiday Monday, with insufficient willpower to go to the last day of Carnival and the rain pissing down in sheets all morning - what better way than to put on waterproofs and spend an hour or so among the gravestones in the old churchyard. St Mary's church was here long before all the terraced houses, before the high street amounted to much, and it still looks like a bit of old English countryside. The monumental graves date from the early nineteenth century, maybe a few from the eighteenth. A pleasant spot on a hot summer afternoon, but the rain brings out a pre-gothic gloom all of its own.
